You Cant Escape High School

You wold think, high school is different if you live in a town where there are vampires and you happen to be the vampire slayer.
However, as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" portrays, high school is high school no matter where and what the situation is.
In the pilot episode, we can see Buffy being much more concerned about getting through High School then slaying the vampires off in the town. When Giles states that he is her watcher and he must prepare here, she replies saying she would much rather get through the social hierarchy and hell that High School is.
Okay, maybe if Buffy puts all her time in slaying she wouldnt have to deal with high school. However, the more she practices her " calling " , the more she has to fight high school and her status as a "loser". In the pilot episode, Cordellia ( the popular girl) seems to like Buffy and her high school life is on a roll, until she accidently thinks Cordellia is a vampire and is about to stab her at a party. Buffy can't explain her actions since she is trying not to tell anyone, which makes high school even more harder for her.

Fitting in is just the same.

• As Wilcox states in her article, Buffy is a hero from the beginning when she begins to befriend the "losers".
  
• Buffy worries about fitting in just like any other newcomer.
  
• Buffy goes to a party and thats when her status starts bending to the outcast side.
• Buffy is confident when she says that she says," Why? cant I do both?" in hanging out with everyone and not just as a group.
  
• She struggles between her calling and dealing with high school hell.
  

Romance is just the same.

• Buffy tells Willow to , " live life and seize the moment" when it comes to guys. Willow takes it too literally, and ends up with a vampire leading her to a deserted area.
• Buffy has sex with Angel, and everything changes after that.
  
• The loser and the popular girl fall for each other.Willow gets jealous when Xander falls for Cordellia.
• Oz is in love with Willow- yet jealousy and revenge is in the way.
  

Parents/Guardians

• Communication between Buffy and her mom is blurry. Her mother does'nt know she is a slayer just as most parents dont know anything about their teenage children in high school. ( Wicox article).
• After Giles finds out that Buffy and Angel have had sex, he confronts her as a parental figure but says " its okay you were in love its not your fault"- and it's all hard for Buffy to go home and her mom doesn't know anything that goes on in her life

Seems like high school to me! + demons, monster, vampires, slayers, and alot of time in the library. It's interesting that a 16 year old girl with all that to worry about still faces the demons of high school.
